This happened to me last year as I went to move my Ultegra groupset to a new frame; both shifters were cracked. They were mounted with a torque wrench to carbon bars; there was absolutely no reason they should have been destroyed. Shimano basically told me that it sucks to be me.

this looks like a case of either overtightening or a crash that dumped the lever.
Unfortunately, your suspicions are correct.
