friend wants a 19mm internal width rim drilled to fit schrader. what’s the consensus here on how wide a double walled alu rim needs to be to safely do this? we are talking about casual family style road cruising. and the whole size would be 8 mm (schrader) vs 6,5 mm (presta)

So it carefully = no problem.
Wouldn’t drill, but use a metal file.
Its been done many times before, its fine. Just remember to smooth any edges to not catch the valve stem.
Just tell him to use a brass adaptor when inflating.
BBB cycling premiered this season a valve replacement that adapts Presta to Schrader
Look into it. Way better option than drilling the rim and risking damage.
You just need to make sure the valve core in your tueb is removable
I did it for my own without ever having issues with it, would not do it for others.
It should be perfectly fine. Here in the Netherlands we all use dunlop valves for non sport bikes, and those are the same size as schrader valves, I know my bike has 19mm rims and so do a lot of others.
