Freddie Sayers talks with UnHerd’s Aris Roussinos reporting from Hungary about the downfall of Viktor Orban’s long-standing administration at the hands of Peter Magyar, explaining that while the landslide victory for the Tisza party appears to be a win for the European establishment, it is actually a political shift that represents a rebranding of the Right rather than a return to liberalism and serves as a primary example of how the broader European continent continues to drift towards the Right.

  2. Watching interviews on MSM from the streets of Hungary, a young woman claimed Orban was a dictator, oppressing the people, and if that was true she wouldnt live to tell the story.
I guess Hungary will enjoy the new EU friendly way with open borders and sustainability taxes to ruin the country.

  3. For those saying "this shows Orban wasnt a dictator" i say "wait a min" , nobody said he was Stalin, or Mao, but that he used EVERYTHING in its power, legal or ilegal, to stay in power, thats for sure and ONLY a huge loss like this, when its sooo obvious that the whole country its against him, he admited defeat, otherwise , for 10% – 20% – 30% margine he would have been still calling Victor.

  4. Why did EU ruling class go against Orban? Because Orban wanted political control over central bank instead of submission to financial feodalism of "neoliberal globalism".

What didn't EU criticize Orban for? His policy towards Israel, which I consider his greatest fault.

As for Russia, blessed are the peacemakers.

  5. Following the last month’s particularly with the war with Iran, the relationship between the 2024 voters and Trump has become very soured. He broke many of the main promises that got him elected, namely Epstein files and no more war involvement. Today if you ask the same voters if they would confirm the same vote they would probably say they wouldn’t have voted at all.

  6. Very insightful conversation that gives me the impression that Hungarians want to be Europeans which is not the same as a member of the EU. Thank you gentlemen.

  7. Transparent support from the US is so vulgar. Hidden, underhanded EU interference is the sophisticated non- vulgar best way. EU needs to outlaw the various AfD like EU parties, and 'sanitize' the internet.

  8. I feel better knowing that the party that defeated Orban is center right, in some issues more right than he was, and that the only remaining leftist political party received less than 1.5% of the vote and that the liberals and leftists HAVE ZERO REPRESENTATIVES ELECTED TO PARLIAMENT IN HUNGARY……ZERO……we have two conservative parties there that won 100% of the seats of Parliament. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdLsvxB0WGg&pp=0gcJCdMKAYcqIYzv

  9. Freddie, congrats on this new podcast version of a kinder, gentler, Leftism.
Unherd type says this indicates that Farage is over before he began. See, the Left is better, need a Fourth way Left.

  10. Let’s hope this is the evolution of a new right wing, and not a rejection of it. Europe can’t afford to go left anymore.

  11. Freddie is clueless. The UK media is by definition state controlled because of the BBC and Ofcom. But he thinks some balance is corruption. Pretty weird. Then he thinks the state taking interest in business is bad because of the free market, which is usually good, but now the UK has sold off most of its industrial capacity. Its hard to understand the metropolitan liberal mind.

  12. Hungary shifted step by step to regim like 'Orwell 1984' where no free media at all, no one free TV, no one free Radio, no free printed newpaper only internet uncensored. Every media full of lies, hundres of court proof of lies…. russian and hungarian secret agents spying against only TISZA ordered by goverment. Orban regim was based of stealing tons of bill. dollars from stat to private accouts like maffia. Orban and friends was poor families and now richer 5 times then UK royal family ….

  13. He was a Manchurian candidate all along. A very strange election, record turn out. No protests, clashes or controversy. The comfortable, bizarre very early concession by Orban. Almost as if he won and there was an arrangement to pass the torch beforehand! People ignore the three actors that all have aligned interests in Hungary. China was clearly setting up both Hungary and Serbia to be the corridor into Europe with the Chinese BRI. Xi visited two years ago. A lot of serious contracts were signed including massive infrastructure deals, financing for lots of new factories, and manufacturing agreements. The US clearly had huge interests in capturing Hungary politically to contain the EU and have influence in votes. Roscom only just began building a new large Russian nuclear power plant that Roscom WITH the full approval of the US because they removed sanctions from Russia to enable it. Hungary was being clearly being moulded to be the new energy hub with cheap Russian oil/gas, to be sold on with a markup, probably for US interests. Further weakening the EU's engine Germany who's manufacturers are already moving there now.

This are the worlds three largest super powers. Energy, manufacturing, financial, industrial, military strength. All are tired of the EU's effort to build an EUSSR, a competing MIC as a new competing superpower. These imperialist ideas of expansionism. US has huge conflicts of interest with the EU and UK for central Europe, the Black Sea through the Danube. Too many contracts signed, converging interests to throw in the bin. All of which will make Hungary a rich, important country.

I think we'll hear the narrative rhetoric, and token acts of alignment with Ukraine for optics. But my guess is that eventually a peace agreement for the war will be signed in Budapest with him getting the accolades, perhaps a Nobel peace prize, huge global state gravitas and all three powers will negotiate terms that meet their interests. All three need and end to the war for stability, investments, and influence and to make Europe nothing but a consumer for their interests! If I'm wrong and he is the EU pro-war puppet he seems to be then either poor Hungary or the US have him compromised to comply! Orban has not walked away into that good night as it may seem!

  14. In Hungary there are NO illegal immigration, nobody wants to stay in Hun. but go to EU – so no hungarian care about immigration (Orban goverment moved lots of worker from far east staying in Hungary

  15. Peter Magyar is actually a loathsome character and that will be revealed soon enough. As a Hungarian ethnic I have been watching him since the scandal when he recorded his own wife in their own kitchen in order to later blackmail her. I watched recordings of his rallies. Which you guys obviously didn't do. You guys have to better inform yourself on details if you want to transmit reality to anglophones. Your current opinions are terribly inaccurate. Magyar is in the pocket of Von der Leyen and basically as far as I can tell, he was built up using lots of western money . I predict he will be the most corrupt ever and Hungary can't expect anything good from now on. I wish you were right, but I am afraid time is on my side.

  16. I think you are missing the big picture! "Orbanism" can be accused of preferential treatment for an emerging alternative elite. However, the big story of this election should be: what happened to the political left (Soros funded globalist progressivism) which, for all intents and purposes went extinct. Literally, the "greens", "socialists with some democratic makeup" do not even have parliamentary status in Hungary. Everyone rushes to criticize Viktor Orban responding in kind to a systematic left wing takeover of state and educational institutions. Whether you can imagine an alternative way (more democratic, less corrupt, less despotic way to heal a nation, good for you! But what remains undeniable is the miraculous and lasting success clearly illustrated by the current political landscape of Hungary.

  17. 12:04 immigration policies will be imposed by European Commission
    It’s quite obvious

    Time will show
The new leader seems to rule with strong hand, he will just be working for European Commission

He has to take orders from others.
Economy will just get worse, or it will be war economy as everywhere in Europe.

  18. Can you now dispense w the personal pejoratives of Orban now Feddy?
If Orban was a dictator he would still be in power.
And the democracy he accepted graciously in leaving is the same democracy he enjoyed for 16 years. So not a regime. He was leading a democratically elected government.
Time to drop your western propaganda verbage and start thinking for yourself.
Want to do an investigation into EU money that poured in to unseat Orban? Or is that OK by you?
It was good to see your very leading questions rebuffed by the sensible responses of your guest.
You would be wise to learn from him and reshape your western propaganda narrative.
This interview did not show you in a good light. Sad really. You used to be more open minded.
