Russia deploys elite drone unit in key city in Kharkiv – Ukrainian troops repel daily assaults

Russia has reinforced the Kupiansk axis in northeastern Kharkiv region with an elite drone formation, significantly intensifying pressure on Ukrainian defenders, according to National Guard officer Vladyslav Zolotaryov. On average, Russian troops launch drones every three minutes. Zolotaryov said Ukrainian troops continue to repel daily assaults in the area but are now confronting a major new threat: a specially deployed Russian elite drone detachment known as “Rubicon.” Operating in the same sector as Ukraine’s Orion unit, Rubicon is tasked primarily with cutting off supply lines. According to Zolotaryov, Russian drones strike logistical vehicles with relentless frequency – roughly every three to five minutes. This constant aerial threat has forced Ukrainian forces to rethink battlefield logistics. Conventional supply methods, including trucks and quad bikes, have become too vulnerable. In response, troops have shifted to unmanned ground systems and so-called “Vampire” platforms – foreign-made robotic carriers capable of transporting ammunition, drones, and even personnel without drivers, even under active fire. Despite the sustained pressure, Ukrainian positions around Kupiansk have not shifted. Zolotaryov emphasized that Russian forces continue attempts to push forward but are repeatedly halted by a well-established “kill zone” that prevents breakthroughs or territorial gains. The Orion unit has been deployed in the sector since late spring 2025, and according to the officer, Russia’s objective has remained unchanged from the outset: to advance. So far, those efforts have failed. Kupiansk remains an important front due its its role as a rail and road hub supporting Ukrainian supply lines, which makes it a constant target for artillery, glide bombs, and ground probing attacks. Russian units have focused on incremental advances, often using small assault groups supported by heavy firepower, attempting to exploit weaknesses rather than launching large-scale offensives. Ukrainian forces, in turn, have prioritized layered defenses, including fortified positions and counter-battery fire, aiming to slow any advance and inflict attrition. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief, Oleksandr Syrskyi, reported a sharp rise in Russian losses inflicted by Ukrainian drones. In March alone, such losses increased by 29% compared to February, with Ukrainian drone units now conducting over 11,000 combat missions daily. On the diplomatic front, momentum has stalled. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said planned trilateral talks with Russia have been delayed, citing a shift in US focus toward the Middle East.
