I bought this Peugeot PKN10 new in 1984 or '85 for $400 (list was $500, but they were eager to get it off the racks).

I have long since replaced the Simplex derailleurs with Campy, and I swapped out the original brakes for Suntour Cyclones. Am probably on my 3rd or 4th wheel set since the original Mavics. But other components like stem & fork, crankset, and seat post (not seat!) are original.

So, I'm not looking to do a "stock" rebuild, but would like to make a solid city ride out of my French ami.

Questions:

  1. I am having the devil of a time trying to get the bearing cups loose from the head tube. I've used lots of Liquid Wrench and WD-40 & tapped them with some vigor (mallet & flat-head screwdriver up against the inner lip of both sides)…and those pups ain't moving.

Should I care? The inside of the bearing cups is smooth & clean.
If so, do I need to pony up for the punch tool? Or is there a method I'm missing to free them up?

2) The bottom bracket…
What should I do here?
I'm intending to keep the 52/42 Stronglight crankset & existing arms (unless some very good reason to replace them). I know I need to get the 23.35mm bracket tool to pop the cranks…but then what?
Should I replace the bottom bracket? Get it serviced & resealed?

3) Paint work…Beyond the minor chips and such there are larger areas (along the inner chainstay, for example) that have some rust. Should I paint over those? Clean up the pain more generally? Or just not worry about it?

Thanks in advance for the wisdom of this sub!
