I’m doing some bike repairs from riding in the winter. Right now I’m stuck in my cassette. The issue is the bolt that is sticking out is thicker than the cassette removal tool. My cassette is a Shimano MF-TZ500-7 and I’m using the 1.3 tool. I originally tried to drill the hole bigger but the metal used on the tool is too firm for my drill bits to be viable. Is it possible to remove the bolt before hand?

  1. You don’t need the chain whip for that job. The only way to get that freewheel off is to get a better drill bit or a tool with a wider hole in the centre.

You may need to bore the tool out to fit around your axel

    You have a Dremel?

If you can remove the axel that’s a better option

That’s a freewheel, not a cassette, so no chain whip required. In fact using one you’ll be cancelling the force you’re applying to unscrew. You just need to use the right tool which is a freewheel remover with enlarged central hole made specifically to accommodate larger axles on ebikes. Don’t mess around with trying to drill a 15mm hole in hardened steel. And you can’t remove the axle without probably killing the motor, so that’s a way more risky and difficult way of going about it.

  4. Wheels Manufacturing makes a tool that goes over these large axles.

  5. It may be possible to remove the axle first. You’d need to remove the lock nut and cone nut from the other side (be ready to catch the bearings), then the axle might come out from the drive side, there are various reasons it might not work, but worth a try if you’re willing.
