Hi there! I am planning a trip from Austria to Rome. At the moment I thought I could do it like this:

  • Follow Alpe Adria Route from Villach to Udine
  • Inland route Udine – Padova – Ferrara – Bologna (Alternative: use EV8 on the coast going through Venice)
  • EV7 to Florence
  • Switch to EV5 (Via Francigene) and continue towards Rome

(The route on the screenshot is just an approximation)

What do you think? Do you have any other suggestions? Two things I'd like to consider are: (1) avoiding busy roads as much as possible (it seems that cyclists in other posts here are not very fond of Italian drivers, to put it mildly), and (2) reasonably priced accommodations and campsites along the way would be nice.

Any help is appreciated 🙂

  1. Solid route! alpe adria and francigenia are awesome.

The cities you wanna do between those two stretches are as well, but the Po area can get quite boring. Just that you know.
