Episode 10 – Cycling from Belgium to Croatia

We started the morning in a tent that had apparently been installed as a slide. Toes pressed against the back wall, luxury space up front, and Wim discovering “new rooms” in our miniature nylon mansion. We gave the Wagersee one last suspicious look, but Nessie had gone full myth again.

Then came the real treat: a full day rolling through the Augsburg-Westliche Wälder, a forest so generous with shade it feels like it’s quietly doing you a favour. The heat was relentless, but the woods had their own cooler agenda, breathing out that faint chill that makes you pedal faster just to stay inside it. Along the way we met a stork who looked unemployed until he executed a lightning strike into the grass, clearly catching something with the confidence of a professional.

Lunch was pure Germany: pretzels with enough salt to keep us preserved for the next century, dipped into jam that had melted into syrup in the heat. By late afternoon the trees thinned out, the fields returned, and we rolled out of the nature park almost by accident. I was genuinely annoyed to leave. I could have stayed in that green shade for days.
