My fiancee just got a new bike – HUP cc cyclocross frame (https://hupcc.com/collections/hup-bikes-youth-cyclocross-track-road-framesets/products/hup-evo-cyclo-cross-disc-frameset) set up as a 1×12 with what looks like the HUP SQT cranks (https://hupcc.com/collections/hup-kids-bike-components/products/hup-kids-cranks-childrens-short-cranksets-104bcd-4-bolt-narrow-q-factor). I know it's a kid's set up but she is 5'2" and it fits her great.

I noticed this gap between the crankset and the frame and am wondering if this is just a case of too long of a spindle on the bottom bracket assembly? Can I fix this with spacers, do I need a whole new bottom bracket assembly, or is this a total non-issue? Seems like I have room pedal-clearance-wise to go to a smaller bottom bracket (last pic). TIA!

  1. Normal for square taper cranks. They press onto a tapered spindle so they should not be closer. The taper is what holds them tight mixed with the pressure from bolt.

  2. Looks normal for square taper to me.

You are judging last generation parts by this generation standards. Square taper were always like that

these are a square taper cranks with a spuare taper spindle cartridge bearing bottom bracket (likely shimano brand).

what is most important is that is there is no play between the crank arm and spindle. the crank arm bolts, which are tightened with an 8mm allen wrench, should be tightened to the correct N/m and periodically checked (once every 6 to 12 months or so depending on use).

Totally normal. The width of the axle determines the chainline and you can’t reduce that without screwing up the chainline and shifting etc.

  5. What’s crazy to me is that a carbon frame is coming with a square taper bb in 2026. That’s wild.

It’s probably wide like that to center the single chainring with your back gears.

Chainline is as good as it can be (for a 1x) and cranks are as close to the chainstays as I’d want to get, leave it alone.

  8. Could move chainring to other side of crank spindle (like where the middle ring would normally be) That should help with your chainline.
