Thinking about picking up a used pair of Zipp 353 NSW wheels, but noticed a small chip on one of the rims—probably from a tire lever. It’s pretty minor and only on the outer edge.

Still, since they’re hookless, I want to be 100% sure it’s not a safety issue. The rest of the wheels are basically like new (around 1,000 km).

I’m buying them through my mechanic (who I trust) and he says it’s fine, but just wanted to get some extra opinions—what do you guys think?

  1. I have some chips like that on some of my carbon MTB wheels and it’s in the cosmetic layer, so I (and NOBL) figured it’s fine. And it’s been.

I would want a hefty discount, and definitely don’t take this as the “is this safe” kind of result, but I see this the same as I see a bigger paint / shallow carbon chip in a carbon frame.

  2. I’ve been riding for years with a bigger chip on a Mavic wheel, haven’t died yet.

  3. They are more than likely going to be safe. The rim looks intact just the outer layer of carbon you can clear coat it. If he’s the original owner it may be worth seeing if zipp would warranty the rim. Their customer service is pretty good. If that’s the case you may be able to lace up the rim on the same hub and buy that from your mechanic.
