I’ll soon be leaving for a cross Canada tour and my grandparents have offered me a graduation gift. Here are the 3 options I’m considering:

  1. Redshift Shockstop stem: I went on a 10-day 1000km tour last summer and my wrists were the only body part that remained sore for a while. I’ve already gotten an aerobar to give my wrists a break in this upcoming tour. I could get bigger tires for a more plush ride but I’d have to get rid of my fenders.

  2. Coros Dura / Garmin 540 solar: they’re the same price with the Garmin being on sale. I’ve always just used my phone (iphone 13 mini), but a dedicated computer could help me save battery life. I’ll be mostly wild camping so charging opportunities will be limited. I’m keen on uploading my routes to Strava to share with my friends.

  3. GoPro hero 12 black: I’d like to film daily shorts, for memories and for sharing with friends and family. I was planning on using my phone but I guess quality would be significantly better with a dedicated camera.

I’d love to get your opinions on this, any other suggestions are welcome!

    1. No experience with it so my opinion is irrelevant

    2. Garmin solar

    3. Use your phone, it’s with you anyway, less to charge / pack / lose

Having a navigation unit was a gamechanger for me. No more worrying about my phone battery or it overheating. No more constant stopping for pulling out the phone. The navigation units also have multy day bateries and have realy good desplays. I have a garmin and I love it.

    1. I had a lot of struggle with my wrists at the beginning of our world tour, but it resolved itself.
The weakest point of your body will always complain until it gets stronger.
    2. We navigated by phone. Depending where you are you need little navigation anyway.
    3. If you’re not planning to get into real content creation I would stick with the iPhone.
