So 3 weeks ago, my coworker brought me in a 1973 World Voyageur that someone had built up for his wife, that she never liked. https://www.reddit.com/r/bicycling/s/yKzCFcDdHP

Here's the updates:

Of course all new cables/housing, new tires (Roubaix 30's up from the 24's) and tubes (it already had 700c wheels on it)

Nitto Billie Bars from Rivendell

Velo Orange Grand Cru 46/30 crankset (replaced 53/42)

13-32 freewheel to replace the 14-28

Brooks B17 saddle to replace the Trek garbage that was on it

Huret front derailleur to replace the broken plastic Simplex derailleur

Sun Tour VX-GT rear derailleur (the Suntour that was on it had some bad jockey wheel issues)

A can of Never-Dull to remove years of garage gunk from the spokes, wheels, and all shiny bits.

and my personal favorite, bar end friction shifters replaced the Campagnolo down tube shifters.

It is an absolute dream to ride now. I'm in the Blue Ridge Mountains, so the gearing that was on it was a nightmare for the elevation around here.

Now… I'm giving it back to my coworker for his wife to try again. If she still doesn't like it, I'll be glad to take it back and use it as an "around town" bike.

That is lovely, but i have to warn you about those kind of bar end shifters on those kind of handlebars.

If you ever drop your bike on its side, it’s highly likely those shifters are the bit that hits the ground first, with the full weight of the bike on them, and can snap them.

I have a bike with a similar set up but the shifter is only on one side, and I’m about to replace that shifter for about the 5th time in the 8 years or so I’ve had it 😢
