Driver gets charged with making an unsafe turn and driving with an obstructed view. Police officer goes on about the importance of wearing a helmet, no mention of the dangers of driving such a large vehicle for obstructed view, the increase in mass and higher likelihood of death to struck pedestrians. The kid was crossing at a crosswalk, presumably with the light in their favour. Note the massive police pick up truck in the photo.

  1. Right on Red = dead

I used to think it was one of our greatest improvements in traffic control. But turns out, it endangers pedestrians so much more.

Hopefully the kid is ok, and gets back on the bike.

  2. yeah that is what they always do

    and other things

i had a t bone crash, car pulled in front from stop sign, his fault

police came to investigate – they had to test my bike brakes to be sure they could skid the tire

and [road bike] – ”those tires don;t have a lot of tread”

    !!!!

    grrrr

  3. Terrible. If it were the child of one of the police officers I bet the driver’s charge would be much more severe and the parents would not have been charged at all.

What if this child doesn’t survive the injuries? The cops are just adding insult to injury here. Another example of Ontario’s police charging honest citizens and letting criminals go with a slap on the wrist.

The kid should have definitely been wearing a helmet but I agree it’s incredibly insulting because this accident happened regardless of that fact. There will always be accidents as long as cities cater to cars.

From the article: “Driver was uninjured”. WTF?!

Of course they weren’t injured. They mowed over a child on a bike with a tank.

  6. Lol. I’m pro helmet but the danger here is the design of the truck increasing the chance of being sucked under the truck and crushed, which a helmet will not prevent.

This is an optimum time for that family to join up with an advocacy group and fight that ticket and also bring light to the unsafe situations in your town. Do you have a local bicycle or transportation board? Do you have bike clubs? State advocacy groups? Call them and make a stink about this.

If the Kid had been on foot making the crossing would they mention a helmet? Ridiculous whattaboutery from the officer.
