This week on the GCN Show, we’re discussing the controversial reality that budget-strapped councils are considering returning deteriorating paved roads back to gravel, and what that means for the future of road bikes. We also dive into fascinating new data to discover which age group rides the furthest on average, and take a look at the newly released Felt Nexar aero bike… Plus not one, but two nuggets for the faithful 16!

Caption: “Smells like another 2nd place”
young people are soft so ride more on zwift, older people are well 'ard therefore ride more outdoors. That's also a way to interpret the figures 😋
Caption comp: Wout’s on the nose with spectators.
This is the same conversation Brits were having 1,500 years ago…..
I’m just gonna quickly find my flint knife and stone axe, nothing’s wrong with those. Just wanna quickly make a stake and a rope for my new cow so I can have a hide for my shoes I’m gonna need soon.
Then I can dig around for Aluminium a bit too for my new handlebar I also need. No problems, I can adapt.
I am happy for less of our money to be spent on roads 👍

I believe the variation in average Zwift riding distance by age group is due to riding to time as opposed to what happens outdoors. As a 64-year-old cyclist, I smash out 50 miles regularly outside, but on the trainer I ride to time (regular one hour) and, as a result, log fewer miles.
I have a fatbike. Surface condition is almost irrelevant
We need paved roads to travel longer distances. Doing a 50-miler on pavement is way different than 50 on gravel. Truly, there's nothing quite like a great road ride.

Please add two people to your list who watch till the end. Me and The Beast (aka my wife) watch during dinner and really get a kick out of you all!
Caption contest: Wout you give me a kiss.
The problem is safety. My wife and I drove an hour outside of Atlanta every weekend to cycle for a decade , and even riding in back country roads became to sketchy. So now I ride in a flat straight neighborhood along the river that is 2.5 miles each way so a 5 mile loop that has a cycling / jogging lane. Boring as hell but very at least it’s safe and at 60 health means everything
In 1930's, Tour de France was raced over unsurfaced roads using tyres of 30-35mm.
Until people discover side by sides there.
