Hi all,

I’m looking to get my first proper road bike and would appreciate some advice before I go ahead.

I’m 6’1 and plan to use the bike for general longer road riding as well as triathlons, standard distance to begin with. I’m trying to buy something that will last for maybe a few years and grow with me if that makes sense? before I’d commit to a larger purchase / learn more about bikes!

The bike I’m looking at is a 2023 Trek Émonda ALR 5 in a 56cm for £850.

The seller says:

Trek Emonda ALR 5 2023

56” frame

A few scratches on the frame but nothing major.

From what I can tell this model has Shimano 105 with hydraulic disc brakes which seems like a solid baseline based on what I’ve gleaned from my initial research into this? I could be wrong on this.

I’m also assuming it may need a basic service and possibly new tyres, which I’ve factored in.

I think I may be between 56 and 58 and I’m not sure if this will feel too small. I’m also slightly unsure on tyre clearance as I believe it takes around 28 to 30mm and the roads where I live are not great.

I’m trying to think long term as well. I’d like something I can use for events and I’ve heard I may need to run slightly more aggressive / better gearing later on rather than outgrowing it so I need to factor in the drivetrain and cassette size? I was thinking it has 50/34 and and 11 speed cassette which should work but I’m very new to this.

Does £850 seem like a fair price assuming everything checks out? Would a 56 work at my height on this bike?

Appreciate any advice, just trying to make a sensible purchase.

I apologise for the divulge of information and offloading of research, I am trying to learn as much as possible but it feels like every time I delve into one aspect 10 more questions raise there head.

I know ultimately my own ability / engine will be the determining factor and I can be overthinking all this, I just don’t want the dreaded position of realising in 2-3 months time “if only I’d known x I’d have went with y bike”

Any help at all is greatly appreciated

Thank you!

im 178cm, ride a 54, and am very upright biased so i sized down which works for me.

this price seems quite solid, i wouldn’t think too hard on this one and snap it up!

as for, I just don’t want the dreaded position of realizing in 2-3 months time “if only I’d known x I’d have went with y bike” -this is inevitable- and at 850 euros, i think you will not be “underwater” on this bike should you find you want to swap it out.
