The bottle is designed to hook onto it, nice if you need a low profile cage, sucks if you don’t have the bottle required.

  2. I’d have to guess that it had another half, maybe even plastic, to actually retain the bottle. That’s gone now, either broken or lost.

Bottle cages are simple. If you don’t like the sleek carbon fiber style, get a King Cage. Don’t worry about this one.

  3. Yup – something’s missing
It has 4 holes but only 2 are required to mount to a frame

  4. It connects to a particular “aero” water bottle that used to look like a regular bottle that had been squeezed on each side. This made it thin when seen from above, and kinda egg shaped when seen from the side. It was a cheap knockoff. The weird shape also made them hard to clean, they could get unhealthy in the bottom corners. Most riders just went back to using regular bottles.

  5. It’s an accessory mount, not for the standard water bottle. The extra holes had some type of strap system.

I would keep it. If you’re thinking about bike packing you can attach it to a fork’s braze-on and hold a small dry bag with voile straps. Or give it to a buddy that bike packs.

  6. It looks like either a special bottle mount for some of low profile/easy access system – an equivalent to something like a fidlock bottle for example – or perhaps a mount for some form of tool or other accessory.

Either way, as a non-standard mount you would need to figure out the correct type of bottle or tool that uses it – maybe a fun challenge for the future, but if you just want a bottle to use, it is probably worth picking up your choice of cage/bottle in the meantime.

  7. Thanks a lot everyone for the responses.

I’ll just keep it in my hoarding pile and just get a new bottle cage, seems like the most logical cost effective thing to do.

  8. you go buy a “normal” bottle cage and put that at the bottom of the trash. or if you must, can set in on a shelf till you get the bottle it’s designed for… but why? the better mousetraps are rarely “better”

I used to have that exact same holder (I think).

It was a cheapo from Wal Mart. There used to be a plastic piece with an adjustable rubber strap to hold different size bottles.

I thought it was neat because it could adjust out to fit an old school 32 oz Gatorade bottle.
