Was prepping my good old Scott speedster (2009) to ride some outside this spring and summer. Noticed this crack in the front today. What now? Google searches not making me very optimistic.. I was out riding two days ago and didn't notice anything, but didn't know about it either.. Do I have to get a new bike you think? 😬 Im attending a race May 1st, so this was very inconvenient..

  1. If you can, get a new bike.

Otherwise, call off that race. It’s not worth the risk. You could be lucky and come out with absolutely no issues whatsoever but do you want to risk that? Especially since that’s the head tube.

  2. Stop riding this one right away. Like, now. A front failure will seriously mess you up.

  3. Thanks for the rapid responses guys. A sad day indeed, and an end to an era. Will use you guys as leverage against the wife in the search for a new bike. Any recommendations?

Do not race on that bike. Well do not ride it full stop but a race environment people are putting their trust in you and riding a death trap like that is a recipe for a big crash

You could strip this one down and keep the parts for a commuter/beater build, or sell them. Maybe not the fork but check it for cracks too.

  6. Yeah, a crack in the steerer tube (front tube?) is one of the worst places to get a crack in the frame. This frame is now toast. Hang it as a memento.

Pull the group set off. Save the wheels. Look for a new frame and fork.

The Alloy Speedster was recalled for this reason. Take it to a SCOTT Dealer and they will give you a new frame.

  9. Buy a new frame, least you want your bike to implode under your legs mid-race.

  10. Yo in 2009-2010 I was working at a bike shop that sold Scott road bikes, they had a huge production issue where steer tubes that were fracturing and  as a result, scott was taking frame warranties.  I did a lot of teardowns that summer for this issue, not sure if they could do much for you at all now but at least there is some context.

  11. What now? New bike. This is one of the worst spots to have a crack in your frame

Give it a hug, thank it for its service, and assure it that “it’s not you, it’s me”. Then get a new frame.

  13. Good thing you noticed that! She toast tho. Maybe email Scott but I mean 09 bike?? Not really their fault but maybe if you nice they hook you up or at least offer a good discount on something. GL

    Happy New Bike Day!

In all seriousness, I would stop running that bike immediately to prevent a catastrophic failure while riding. Loosing your front wheel on a big downhill would result in a crash that would lead to serious injury or worse.

You don’t notice anything *yet* because it’s “only” cracked, not fully broken.

Think of that frame like your favorite coffee mug. One day you see a little crack. But because you don’t notice anything leaking or whatnot, you figure it’s just fine, so you keep using your favorite mug. But then one day you fill it with a fresh, hot coffee, and as you’re walking to the table with your newspaper, it explodes, scalding your hands and ruining your new slacks.

Don’t ride a cracked frame unless you want it to explode while you’re riding.

  16. As many others have already said, that frame is done. Do not ride it again.

A catastrophic failure at the head tube at just the wrong time could result in very serious injury.
