I have bene fighty really wonky shifting with a new GRX Derailleur, cassette, chain ,and even a new hanger with inconsistent shifting , the chain going into spokes or refusing to go to smallest cog despite limits being adjusted etc. I thought maybe my new hanger was bent so I am trying out a alignment tool for the first time and it's moving Vertically way off where my 12 o'clock reference point is…what am I doing wrong

the part with the little sliver rod should be able to slide on the larger tube so you can keep the tool on the rim. looks like you can do that by loosening one of the purple knobs. the tool is connected to the hanger not the hub axle so if you keep the position of the silver rod the same its normal for it to move off the rim as you move it around.

  2. I’m not sure quite what you mean by moving vertically way off, etc. Are you talking about how it wants to hit the tire instead of the rim when you rotate it counterclockwise from the vertical position? If so, that’s why the indicator can slide along the tube without changing the feeler length; loosen the upper set screw in the 1st image so you can keep the feeler against the wheel.

Also, in case the tool directions aren’t clear on this, always check at the same spot on the wheel. Wheels can be untrue and trying to adjust the derailleur hangar while chasing that around will drive you crazy.

  3. Yes to the post that mentions moving the silver indicator up and down the purple tube.

But also make sure your wheel is true (or indicate from the same spot on the rim). Really though, do it on a true, properly dished wheel.
