It's me again, got this '86 Sierra for $10 last weekend. I planned to re-build it as a typical x-bike as seen on this sub, but y'all helped me realize it's already an x-bike as-is. So instead I took it all apart, cleaned everything, added new grease, and lightly hand-polished the frame and all the shiny bits and put it back together. Gawd it turned out great. Not selling this one, even though I already have an '87 smoked-chrome Sierra set up as an xtracycle Clydesdale

It’s a xbike thing of beauty
Smoked Chrome has to be one of the coolest colors for a bike!
Duuuude that thing is gorgeous! As someone with a ’87 High Sierra, this thing is an absolute machine! And I get compliments everywhere I go. Enjoy!
Yeah this is killer!

It’s a beautiful rig!
I agree that if it ain’t broke don’t fix it, with the caveat that if those are the OG tires they’re probably *really* not nice. So basically if you *do* decide to upgrade in the future I’d do the tires for performance, followed by the wheels (likely extremely heavy).
$10. Was that Brooks on it?
Mint. I need those tires
👏 👏 👏
$10? Look at that garage queen? We should all be this lucky.
Glad you left the triple
Good advice, but it’s a bit of both for me.
Some parts and systems of a retro bike setup are perfectly useable and good to go. It’s hard to justify replacing things that still work great!
But, I simply like tinkering. Building and changing things are half the fun. Especially when you can make new updated tech work with or optimize old school quality. Super neat.
My advice for anyone getting into ” xbiking ” is this: Clean and lube moving parts like the O.P did here, and ride it as is for awhile. You’ll notice things that you like and things that you don’t like; maybe get a sense for cockpit reach and fit, or maybe get a better understanding of how the gear range works for your specific riding geography. Maybe there are some parts that work great for you on the bike but you just don’t like them because they’re butt ugly coated in faded plastic. Cool, now you have a specific plan.
Definitely don’t build things that you see online without taking your own personal fit and riding style into account first.
This subreddit is going to kill me! Why EU is not so cool 😭😭😭
