hey friends – i have some experience rebuilding 90s mtbs, but really limited to that era. my brother has a 1988 3×6 schwinn high sierra and when riding with him he made me check out this issue: chain slapping the chainstay when he stops pedaling. he thought it was the derailleur but it wasn’t moving when this happened, it was his cassette continuing to spin causing the chain to slacken up.
i’d love to try to get this fixed for him – just curious if i need to get him a new hub/freewheel/cassette? any guidance would be grand. thanks!

When you stop pedaling the cranks stop moving but the cassette keeps moving due to drag in the rear hub assembly causing slack in the chain. Rear hub needs service.
