My kids is enjoying riding her bike. I got my dad’s late 80’s Specialized Hardrock out to ride with her. What’s the best way to get rid of this rust on the handlebars and the seat post? Steel wool? Also I want to replace these grips. They are foam and terrible. Nasty lol. Can someone make a recommendation for budget friendly replacements? I would assume I just cut them off with a utility knife and glue new one on?
I know nothing about bikes, obviously so any recommendations/help is appreciated.

Ball up aluminum foil and sand it off. It won’t get rid of it all but it’s cheap. If you really want to go after you can use emery cloth or other stuff.
Cut off the grips and get rubber ones. You don’t need to glue them on. They just slide on. I got some from amazon just make sure you measure the old ones. I got ones that were too short
Aluminum foil and wd40 will clean that rust up a bit.
Grips is easy – just cut or pull them off and then slide new ones on. No need for glue – there’s a variety of ways to get them on – alcohol, hairspray, compressed air etc. I like a couple of cable ties – that lets them slide on.
Any bike shop will have some rubber ones for not much.
Yes to the steel wool, and for grips, they make plenty these days for cheap. I really like my OURY gripe, and they come in lots of colors.
I’ve been a fan of a product called Never Dull for cleaning up surface rust on metal.
Steel wool on the rusted chrome
As others have said aluminium foil.
I had spot rust on my handlebars and it worked a treat. Ball up the foil , not to tight and wet it. Rub it and you will see the rust disappearing. The foil abraide the rust off and also fills the pitting.
You may see some small dots were the rust started but only up close. It’s not a permanent fix, but it’s a cheap one.
Awesome, thank everyone!
