I recently acquired this crazy 1988 Panasonic Titanium track frame that I think was either a prototype, custom pro frame (130mm rear dropouts so maybe a fixed winter trainer), trade show bike, or ordered through their PICS system.

However, there’s a weld line in the frame’s bottom bracket shell that blocks the shell of my Phil Wood bottom bracket from entering. I was able to take the Phil shell off, and install the naked BB, but the way Phil BB cups work, there was then nothing to prevent the cups from threading more or moving while riding.

As a result, play developed in my NDS crank. What’s my solution here? Should I get another bb, file the weld down, or use a strong threadlocker? I also installed the bb with Park anti-seize instead of blue threadlocker, so that could also be the issue.

You installed a square taper Phil BB without the center? That’s not ever going to work since then you can’t torque the cups down to spec without the center piece. You’ll just destroy the bearings. I would clean up the minor protrusion carefully with a Dremel. File will probably be a huge pain as it’s titanium.

Normally I’d say to just file the weld down a bit, but on a frame like I’d definitely try a different BB first.

On a separate note, that thing is fucking stunning! Be sure to post it on the fixed gear sub.
