If you ever zoom in on the map of Europe, you’ll notice a peaceful lake nestled between Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. But if you look closer, you’ll discover that neither of these countries truly owns it. But why is that?
Well, the confusion comes from the fact that there’s no official agreement on where the borders within the lake should be.
Germany believes the lake should be split down the middle between itself and Switzerland, with Austria getting a tiny portion.
Austria, on the other hand, thinks the entire lake should be shared equally by all three countries, with no borders at all. And lastly, Switzerland agrees with Germany that the lake should be divided, with each country owning its share of the water.
This disagreement leaves Lake Constance in a legal gray area, where if a crime is committed on the lake, the offender could face charges from multiple countries – since no one agreed where one border ends and another begins.

Taking into account these proportions, as well as the functionality and the need to maintain an ecological balance, I would propose the following division of the water area:
The area of Lake Constance is 536 km², including the Upper Lake (Oberleuk, 473 km²) and the Lower Lake (Unterleuk, 63 km²). The coastline of the three countries has a significant difference in length:
– Germany: ~173 km (the longest).
– Switzerland: ~72 km
– Austria: ~28 km (shortest).
1. Germany (32% of the coastline):
– Receives 290 km² (54% of the area).
– Rationale: longest coastline, economic activity and importance of the tourism sector.
2. Switzerland (13% of the coastline):
– Receives 150 km² (28% of the area).
– Rationale: geographical proximity and environmental responsibility, particularly in the southern sector of the lake.
3. Austria (5% of the shoreline):
– Receives 50 km² (9% of the area).
– Rationale: The smallest coastline, but maintaining access to important coastal areas near Bregenz.
4.International zone:
– The center of the lake, with an area of ~46 km² (9% of the total area), remains under joint management of the three countries for navigation, fishing and environmental control. This division takes into account the length of the coastline, economic interests and maintains a fair balance between all countries. What do you think of my proposal?

Actually Germany treats it as if there was a border in the centre but officially, it has no stand on where tho border is and who it belongs to. Its position is to not have a position.
