I recently went from N+4 to N1 and my only bike now is the TCR in the pic. I absolutely love it but the max tire clearance is 32mm and the ultra derailleur can take up to a 30 tooth cog in the back, max.

Asking for recommendations on a bike that can be decently fast on road (up to 20mph) and that can take 40+ mm gravel tires to take off-roading, and with a lower gearing than 34/34. Also a bike that can accommodate bags and racks and all that sort of stuff for bike bikepacking. I live near DC and there are a bunch of good trails around my area, and I really want to ride the GAP and C&O this year.

I am familiar with Surly bikes, but wanted to ask for advice on any other recommended brands. steel or carbon (no aluminum).

My budget is not too much, maybe $3k but can go higher if a really good bike is well-priced.

TIA!

I’d recommend you take a look at Argon 18 – I have a Krypton Pro and love it to death! The krypton/Krypton Pro’s have the capability to take a very wide tire – I believe up to 40 mm. And these things are a proper road bike in their own right. Not to mention with the right tires they could hit the trails pretty well. You should definitely check them out…..
