Hi guys, my friend and I are looking at some routes for a backpacking trip in BC this may. We should arrive the 15th and go for 10-12days of riding. We wanted to do a part of the GNBR but some people told us there might still be snow on that route by that time.
Would you guys have any suggestions for a similar route? If we can start at near cranbrooke or kelowna airport it would be nice. We would also love to be cycling through some big nice peaks of the rockies.
Any advice helps !!
Thanks

You’re probably going to have a good amount of snow over Elk Pass still as well. Your section south of Fernie around Broadwood might also be a question mark. That’s groomed snowmobile track which tends to stick around a lot longer. Was in there two weeks ago on a fat bike and it was very snowy still.
Cranbrook and Kelowna are in really good shape at the moment as it was a really low snow year, but getting between the two is going to be difficult without road riding. Gray Creek will be still snowed in but if you’re okay with cutting through Creston and taking the highway you might have a better time. I think a lot of the KVR/ C&W will be doable with how little snow there is. Myra Canyon/Chute Lake area is still a bit snowy but might be okay in two weeks.
If you stay low and go up from Cranbrook towards Golden you’ll probably have a good time as well. You could potentially ride the 93 if you were set on a trip with Banff involved and that’s a nice road ride too.
