Hey guys, I’m wanting to get back into BMX. I rode this old GT over twenty five years ago, it was my pride and joy until I got my drivers license😅

My daughter has been super into skateboarding and we have a small skate park minutes down the road. I thought this would be a great opportunity to have fun and keep an eye on her as she learns and gets more comfortable skating.

My questions; I’m 6’4 and weigh around 190lbs, I see I’ll need a TopTube of 21”. What about crank length? I’m looking to get a complete bike for around $500 or less.

When I was a kid, Dan’s Comp was the only bike supplier, I see there’s a few more distributors out there (City Gounds, Source, Albes) but every site is pretty much out of stock.. what gives?? I like the Sunday Scout and Eastern Thunderbird (both TT 21”) Are there any other options similar to those bikes? I’d like to practice my grinds, bar spins, and manuals first and use the dirt pump track. Also, why are the brakeless bikes more expensive? Ive looked at Facebook marketplace and called the local bike shops here (Western North Carolina) but every store only carries MTBs and all the used bikes are Walmart crap. If anyone lives in NC and knows of a good supplier, please let me know. I’d rather buy/shop local.

    At 6’4 you want 21.25

170/175, but cranks aren’t always a height thing, some tall riders like even shorter cranks if they have a small chainstay for foot clearance

Spend a little extra, you’ll get 10x the bike. 100% crmo, sealed bearings. You’re big, you’ll bend a 1020 backend simply doing a sketchy 180. Fit makes a 21.25, sadly not 4130. DK has the flux but it’s $$

  2. You realistically could do with longer than 21”. Way back then longer options were less and still not massively long anyway. At 6.4 you could do with 21.5-21.8 and it’ll do you a world of good fit wise on your back.
Problem is, compete bikes don’t come in the extra length sizes, so I’d suggest possibly a 22” wheel bmx, which are perfect for tall guys, and/or check the used marketplace as you’ll get more bang for your buck.
Don’t worry so it crank length, it’s not remotely a deal breaker when getting back into bmx.

    Awesome flatland frame.

For TT length something longer than 21″ would be best, but there’s not a whole lot of completes that are over 21″. For cranks length, stick with what you’re used to. I’ve always run 175mm but younger riders like them smaller. I do recommend Sunday, solid bikes.

Only complete chromoly bike is the kink whip xl for that price and maybe cult devotion on sale, and the bikes usually come with brakes unless specified otherwise they’re just more premium and street oriented and a lot of those guys don’t run brakes
