Bulgaria – Europe’s New (Affordable) Mountain Bike Mecca?
Sometimes the best mountain bike destinations are the ones you never planned for.
In this video we head to Bulgaria, a country we had never seriously considered for mountain biking — until a simple message changed everything. Without doing any research, without knowing what to expect, we booked flights to Sofia, packed our bikes, and went all in.
What followed was an unforgettable MTB adventure.
From the moment we arrived, Bulgaria surprised us. Long drives through raw landscapes, unfinished resorts, and impressive mountain ranges led us to Bansko, a ski resort surrounded by wild terrain and serious trail potential. Behind the rough edges lies a place that’s developing fast — and doing so in its own way.
Over several days we rode a mix of flow trails, alpine-style descents, loamy forest singletrack, roots, rocks, natural drops and man-made features. Trails are marked, maintained by locals, and feel raw but thoughtfully built. October conditions turned out to be perfect: after a dry summer, recent rain delivered prime trail grip.
We explored:
Long alpine descents starting above the tree line
High-speed and technical trails in Pirin National Park
Epic 10 km descents in the Rhodope Mountains — over 30 km of downhill in a single day
Shuttle-assisted riding combined with relaxed climbs
Natural hot springs, local food, and unbeatable value for money
Beyond the riding, Bulgaria left a strong impression. The culture, the friendliness of the people, the contrast between old villages and modern ski resorts, and the laid-back vibe made this trip special. It’s not polished — and that’s exactly the charm.
So… is Bansko a must-visit mountain bike destination?
Trail-wise: absolutely solid.
Experience-wise: even better.
What makes this place stand out is the total package — great trails, stunning landscapes, affordable travel, easy access, and passionate local guides building something new year after year.
Bulgaria feels like a region with massive potential — and it’s only getting better.
Must visit? Yes. Especially if you’re looking for something different.
Cheers 🤙
