Whatâs old is new again. Circa 1997. The Hayes 22mm caliper mount. Believe it or not, this is what changed mountain bike braking forever and truly brought disc brakes to every day mountain bikes. Back in â97 or â98, I bought a bike with these brakes on it. I was the first in my crew to do so. Very shortly after, we did a big rain ride. I got to the bottom of a long and rowdy trail, well ahead of everyone else, feeling good and on a solid bike. Then, after a while, they showed up with their v-brakes; hands sore, brake pads roached and ground down, They were suddenly slow. Rim brakes were [#over](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlGqN3AKOsA)
If you are interested in building this bike with disc brakes, there are a couple of adapters out there you could use to convert this old 22mm Hayes mount to modern 34mm flat mount.
Thereâs one on thingiverse that you should be able to find by searching some combination of âHayes 22mmâ and âflat mountâ
I recently did this same thing and didnât love the thingiverse one, so I modified it a little to fit my bike better (Klein attitude). If youâre interested I can upload that part.

Wow thanks for sharing this first time I’ve seen this type of mount and glad to add this info to my brain that might never be needed but it’s bike nerdy and I’m here for it!

You can get 22mm Hayes to 51mm IS adaptors on eBay, no idea how the quality is.
A few years ago I stumbled across a guy in Canada making all sorts of flatmount adapters and I think they had Hayes 22.
I don’t recall the name but it was something that made a funny acronym

If you need an adapter, let me know. I have a couple hundred ods and sods adapters. I might have the one you need.

Parallel mount or 22mm Hayes, needs a funky adapter that might be hard to find.
Hmm, thanks very much, yep, I’ve not seen one like that befoređ¤ˇââď¸
you need to measure the distance between the two screw holes, it should be 34mm for direct mount disc brake.

you need the A2Z parallel to IS!
I can get you the adapter, but they aren’t cheap. Last I checked it’s about $75 usd
FYI the A2Z adapter did not fit on my medium frame, the rear portion of the adapter was touching the seatstay
Here are some pictures of my 1999 Paragon that is now a wall decoration âşď¸
