I’ve seen this when tires were run at too low pressure, compromising the threads(on vittorias as well). Can’t say if that’s def what happened here but is kinda looks like it.

just kinda what happens when you are shoving your tires between rocks a lot. i wouldn’t worry about it till things start to actually fray

My friends made fun of me for the “fur” coming off of my Barzos. If you ride a lot of chunk this is gonna happen. I’d say you’re fine.

It’s fine. Vittorias do this more than others, and it’s nothing to worry about unless it gets really bad.

Vittoria have cotton side-walls. You should check up with someone better versed in their tires than me, but they definitely indicate being ridden on too low tire pressure. They might be dead, and most likely are reaching their end, but they might have more life in them…

This looks like more than normal patterning in my experience so you might be running very low pressure?
But Vittorias do this. Ive done many thousands of kilometers of bikepacking on Mezcals that look like this without issues.

I have the same tire on my back wheel. Bike shop said it was common with that brand/model.

Both my mezcal and barzo both look like this

My 2yo Mezcals did it, but I’ve not seen any real problem other than the looks. Newer Mezcals, same sidewall, maybe a little darker, have not done it at all.
