Just got my bike back from a service and splashed out on the shiny new official forged aluminium cargo block. €70!

Even with official bags, the gap where you're supposed to put your fingers to unlock it is minuscule, with sharp edges on either side. And I don't have particularly chubby fingers (some pictures). If I had King Charles style sausage fingers, or was wearing gloves in winter, I don't see how I could get this off at all.

Also, the bag doesn't simply snap on. In the video there's a basket with 1.5kg of water in it, and it snaps easily just with gravity on my other bikes. On this, I have to push down pretty hard. Which simply turns a 1 step process into a 2 step one. Double the effort.

It really seems like every time Brompton try to change the design these days, all they do is highlight how good the original Andrew Ritchie design is. The cargo block that was on my 1988 Brompton was identical to the standard one today. And perfect. This one cost €70 though, so I guess I'm stuck with it.

Forged aluminum cargo block – how is this an "upgrade"?

  1. I have a string on the trigger of my original cargo block that loops around the base of the stem. Super easy to use. It looks like it would be easy to add one to yours.
