Here in Florida, we have several larger (20-30+ riders) casual group rides.

Casual Tuesday Ride was started, to my knowledge, in the Tampa area a few years ago. One of the riders moved to Gainesville and started CTR here two years ago, and the 2nd anniversary ride was last night (video above). This is a true, all-inclusive casual ride – no drop, 'party pace' (8-10 miles an hour), smaller routes that don't go above 12 miles typically. It's a great way for the noncompetitive cyclists, the commuters, etc. to meet the rest of the community.

Our casual scene in north Florida is pretty active, how about yours? What types of rides similar to this exist elsewhere in the world?

What's the casual group ride scene like in your area?

Whoever down voted this to start, lives a very sad life.

We have a couple that happen. Our “Lansing Bike Party” meets up within our city of Lansing every Friday, at the local bicycle co-op. It used to spout bullshit about beginning inclusive to new riders, but they tend to scare off anyone new who wants to join, unless they have experience riding a bicycle. It used to be cool.

I’m looking at moving to the Detroit area soon and they’ve got the Detroit Slow Roll. I’m much more excited about that.

There are the occasional group rides that happen in the city during the summer though. I like to attend those and cork traffic, because otherwise people are acting like confused baby birds when crossing the road.

Chiming in from CTR in Tampa! We’re doing 13-15mph every Tuesday at 7pm now and 12-14mph on the last Tuesday of the month which normally gets a little larger crowd. We keep it around 10-12ish miles with a half way stop at a different park every week.

Looks like my group rides. I do critical mass and similar group rides to that. In my group its more of an older crowd, 30s on up to 60s and 70s. The 30s group is the majority.

  4. There seems to be a couple of groups going most week nights here in Denver 🙂

  5. I live in Santa Monica, California. Casual group ride will have pretty much every single person fully kitted up in Lycra. Lots of MAAP, most people on new or newish fully carbon bikes. Fitness levels vary but feels like almost everybody could go out and ride a few hours without too much trouble. Cycling is big here and the culture around it makes that obvious. Pretty cool to see OPs group. Makes me wonder if there’s stuff like that around here.
