Hi all, I ordered what I thought was a new generic 6/7/8-speed chain and received a new genuine Shimano IG51.
I didn’t think anything of it and went to install it on a single speed conversion (originally a Shimano 3×7). Turns out it slips like crazy.
I tried it with two different chainrings and two completely different rear cogs. I also tried a number of different level of chain tension. No dice.
I bit the bullet and swapped it for a new no-name 6/7/8-speed chain and alas, it’s perfect. No slipping.
Looking at these two chains side by side (IG51 on the left), the main visual difference is that the plates seem more ‘loose’ on the IG. When handling the chain, the IG bends much easier longwise (torsionally) compared to the standard chain. The roller width is an identical 2.3mm on both.
What’s the go with Shimano Interactive Glide vs. the more common Hyperglide?
A quick google suggests the IG chain should be compatible with a HG system but clearly that’s not the case here?

Wild you can still guide an Interactive Glide chain!
What do you mean by slipping? Iirc the IG cogs were wider than HG, so shifting would be janky. But the chain pitch should be the same, so I wouldn’t think it would fall off a single speed setup if you are using 3/32 cogs. The IG chain should be wider than necessary on the inside anyways.
