Wanting to do a southwest US Bikepack of 4-6 days starting May 7. My buddy and I have drop bar salsa Fargo bikes (rigid)with 2.6"/2.8" tires.
I looked through the bikepacking.com routes and it just seems like recommendations for most of their New Mexico and Utah routes highly recommend hard tails with decent tire sizes. At times I read the comments and see that people who have tried rigid drop bar bikes like mine would not suggest it.
Trails I have considered though I feel I am pretty under biked and worried about crashing include the Coconino loop, San Rafael swell, Moab area routes. I I am currently riding the southern half of the Baja divide and the bike has done well as the route is generally beat up dirt roads and only really had trouble in really loose steep (descent) volcanic rock as it just kept sliding out.
Thought maybe I could do the beginning portion of the Kokopelli from Loma/Rabbit Valley to Dewey Bridge or Cathedral Valley (this would work) or Cedar Mesa area.
Anyway, if anybody has suggestions I would love to hear. Sometimes I find that if you are familiar with an area you can choose a portion of a route that is more mellow and just call it quits or tack on something for additional days or to get back to your vehicle
Thanks all.
