My boss had his office (a metal container) placed underneath one of these … and on his way home after a couple of days under the electricity supply he forgot where he was and where he was going … also no power in his arms .. and after researching this he realised he was basicallyin a massive electro magnetic field .. so yes dj you're right ..

A chap in Canada ended up in lot of trouble a long time ago after rigging up an arrangement of wires under a super high voltage transmission line that generated a supply for his property by induction using the alternating current magnetic fields beneath the high voltage lines.
The electric company's line inspection helicopter crew spotted it.

We used to walk under high voltage pylons at night time carrying flourescent light tubes and they would light up at full brightness – really cool!

This is what we in the trade call "pick up" or better known as impressed voltages. I work around 400kv and below everyday at work and unfortunately its part of the work that cant be avoided. You get used to it eventually. Is your bike frame made out of aluminium? Aluminium tends to charge up very easily compared to say steel. There are a huge amount of variables at play ie weather conditions, circuit loading, voltage etc.

Yes, high voltage power cables give off an electromagnetic field. Try the transmission tower at Membury Services, you can feel the heat off that.
That's a phenomenon known as 'heavy electricity'. It can build up and literally drop out of the cables.

I think this is a 275kV AC transmission line, so you will get induced currents in any metal item in the field around the cables.

As a physicist, I'm not surprised that you experienced this when cycling your conductor (bike) under a current carrying electricity pilon. Static shock. The radiation experienced is not ionising, so you needn't worry too much. Its electromagnetic radiation… Your meter could be measuring magnetic field strength in milliGauss, 20 mG is a very small number. Understanding the meaning and significance of readings is important. Training and education is required to use this device.

I've also had a shock while travelling underneath those same pylons on my bicycle. All my gooch and ball hair got singed but i didn't realise it was caused by the pylons as I also had a hot fart at the same time.
I'll go back once my hair has grown back to see if it was the pylon or not.

you're clearly not a sparky or anyone with any kind of actual education. high current electricity gives off radiation to which that meter will read. just because you bought it off amazon and have shown it to the camera with a high reading doesn't mean it's dangerous, the shock you got is most probably static and you simply act like an absolute little bitch.

It's normal, seriously. There is a ton of videos on YouTube explaining this. In foggy or rainy weather it will be even "worse". Walkie talkies will have hard time working there.

When I was in primary school, there were pylons near by and I remeber I could hear a buzzing noise comming from them when it rained.
What does 20 MG even mean ? How many watts, how many amps, how many volts per square metre presumibly. Does the M represent Mega or miliwatts, if its lower case its normally mili. To work out the watts you need to know the voltage and current so use ohms law P=IV
Maybe the handle bars and bike frame was acting like an antenna, recieving the EMF with the size of the antena similar to the wavelength being transmitted.
