This carbon Specialized Crux, bought new, has been ridden less than 500km and I've noticed a pair of cracks on the seat tube.

I'm assuming it's just the paint, as the bike hasn't seen any rough use, but I want to get a reddit consensus to help figure out where to go next.

  1. These look like they are the frame not paint, I’d get a second opinion for sure but I’d prepare yourself for sending this back for replacement

  2. Nope, that’s the carbon. Where did you buy it? Because the paint close to the BB area has a lot of orange peel, as if it was repainted.

  3. Frame crack. Paint does not crack randomly and it moves and cracks from movement underneath

  4. “Bought new” and “carbon” means your frame is done.

If this was “20 year old steel bike bought cheap second hand” I was thinking the paint was rusting away and someone did a shitty paint job before they sold it.

  5. Thanks for all your confirmations, I’ve got a local specialized dealer who has agreed to start the warranty process. Wish me luck!

When frame is stressed first place where paint cracks are welds. Paint doesn’t randomly cracks in middle of the tube unless physically damaged. This looks like a cracked frame and someone tried to conceal it with paint.

  7. The fact that the cracks started from a pair of stress risers might suggest a design or manufacturing flaw, and Specialized may be willing to work with you on a replacement frame.

I’d ask for an aluminum one though,. The truth is that it’s an inherrent risk of an inappropriate material. But here we are. This is a good example of why I’d personally never ride carbon. (Unless I was sponsored, but that ain’t happening.)

Bro. That frame is DONE! Do not ride that anymore. Call the family and plan the funeral
