This build was inspired by a recent two-month bikepacking trip. Living off the bike that long meant I packed for comfort, which quickly became a logistical headache. Cold, wet weather meant extra layers, plus cooking gear, food, and water. On top of that, I couldn’t realistically bring my climbing gear, which was supposed to be a big part of the adventure.
Some sections of the route were pretty remote, and finding a café to charge electronics wasn’t always possible. My phone died more than once and I occasionally had to navigate by feel. The bag setup also made stealth camping annoying since packing and unpacking took way longer than it should have.
Even though a different bag setup might have helped, I felt the bulky gear needed a completely different approach.
I bought the fork first, but finding a 20” front wheel with a thru-axle hub was surprisingly difficult, so I ended up building one myself. Since running out of battery was such an issue on the last trip, I also went with a hub dynamo and charging module to keep electronics topped up while riding.
Originally I planned to mount it on an old MTB frame, but winter sales got the better of me and I ended up building a whole new bike. Pretty happy with how it turned out so far—now it’s time to dial in the details.

Can you share more info on your dynamo charging setup? I want to do the same thing on a cycle-truck build.
This is super cool. How’s it ride loaded and unloaded?
That fork with the Patagonia duffel got me going…
I’m considering a cargo fork conversion myself. I can’t see it too well, it’s a Surly I assume?
Thanks for posting.
Supercool. More info on the fork please!?
This is cool, dude!
The rear wheel. Is a 26 or 29er?
Cool bike! It’s probably just me, but don’t those spokes in front have an awful lot of bend?
