Cycling comes naturally to our community where we hold the environment at the heart of so much of what we do – whether it’s our allotments and wildflower meadows, outdoor lessons and classrooms or the banks of recycling boxes in every area of the school from crisp packets down to toothpaste tubes! It wasn’t until recently that we realised our annual WOW (Waldorf One World) whole school sponsored bike ride – where every child from classes 1-8 rides out at various stages of the 14 mile Solar System cycle route – is rather unique. (And we’ve been doing it for more than 20 years!): “It’s an incredible achievement to get so many children cycling from one school,”: Rosslyn Colderley, Sustrans England Director.
“York Steiner School are showing the art of the possible and setting an example other schools can and should follow,” Sam Jones of national cycling charity, Cycling UK.
All we know is the utter joy on the faces of our young people as they set off this morning (with cycling York MP, Rachael Maskell cheering them on.) And how tired and how very proud they will be on their return. Energised, excited, active and full of life – and that is the ethos of a Steiner education…
