The good news: Cycling in the Weser Uplands and the Harz Mountains is a feast for the eyes. Now in May, the yellow rapeseed fields contrast perfectly with the blue sky. And everything is framed in fresh green. The bad news: It’s always up and down. Down is quite beautiful, but some climbs are challenging with a loaded bike.

The night on the Weser was better than expected. Despite the early morning frost on the blades of grass, my camping gear served its purpose. It was nice and cozy in my sleeping bag. Around 9:30 a.m., I drank a cappuccino at the Hamelin Horse Market in the shadow of St. Nicolai Market Church and met Wilfried. Like a professional tour guide, he told me about some of the highlights of Hamelin’s history. Of course, he also told me about the Pied Piper legend. According to Wilfried, it probably has a real origin. At that time, recruiter were on the move, looking for volunteers to settle in Transylvania.

Goslar was only a quick visit. It had a very nice market square. I had to get to the campsite near Bad Harzburg early. The camping club “Die Wölfe vom Wolfsstein” (The Wolves of Wolfsstein) is idyllically situated in a small forest.
