It's a tough job though. Not everyone is strong enough to do it. We do need these people.
Its a fine balance too many people doing it drives wages down
And as the last few years have established. The reality is far beneath any of the promised 'benefits'. With convicted criminals being recruited along with any number of undesirables by ruthless government ministers, would you want to be under CCTV 24-7 with any error or omission caused by commonly ignorant office staff the drivers responsibly? Most come to know they are paid less than min wage as blame means wage deductions, even for road closures or vehicle defects. Hence, any sensible able folks don't drive HGVs as 60hr weeks destroys any family life.
I really wanna do it but need to get used to driving a car for a couple of more years
No training takes a week including the test, who told you that rubbish
Yes I agree. More driver are desperately needed to keep our wages at minimum wage
It’s all good and well getting people into the industry … retaining them is a whole other story .. most HGV roles ain’t a 9-5.
Apart from no one will give you a job unless you have been driving for a year. Desperate for drivers but not that desperate
2 to 3 months you can do it in a ten day course
The only reason there's a shortage of drivers, is cause there's a shortage of fair jobs.
No one wants to work for 2 years doing 15h a day for £12.40h just to get experience to get an actual decent job (if they get lucky).
The government scams you into doing the mandatory CPC, all about road safety, but there's no road safety in the real world if all the drivers work absolutely knackered cause it is ok for businesses to use you as a slave.
Stop calling it a shortage and start calling it slavery.
There’s never been a driver shortage. They wheel out the same old shite year on year, it’s just a way to saturate the industry with new drivers and keep the wages down.
I’ve been doing it 20 year and never seen a shortage or empty shelves🤔🤷♂️🤷♂️
Working from home is lazy
Fixing the shortage is not brain surgery! Make the test easier and remove burdensome red tape.
I would do too if it didnt cost £3k…
There's no shortage.
Shortage because of 13.65 an hour
The job has certainly dumbed down and became easier in a lot of ways since I started…how did we ever cope doing multi drop in London with ropes and sheets no sat nav or phones or auto gear boxes trying to find customers or parking, stopping in every fuel station till u found one that took your card no fridge or microwave and night heaters that worked sometimes 😂😂😂..to be honest it's better being dumb..i don't miss the good old bad days 😂..my first distance job they said there's the keys and ppwk off u go…eh!!!!
Chief executive LOL
I'm 63 years old and have Just finished a 15 hour shift, got home at 8pm will be up again at 5am and back into work.
Bad points about the job
Getting your load stolen
Getting your diesel stolen
Getting your cab broken in to
Being away from home all week
Parking in lay-bys overnight and not getting any sleep
Over paying for parking in services and not being able to get a decent shower every day
Putting up idiots at delivery points
Putting up with idiots on the road
Yep sounds like a dream job😂
63 this year not renewing DCPC the job is not for the faint hearted eg by Wednesday you can have clocked up 45 hrs i rest my case.cannot wait to retire and set off on my narrowboat at 2-3 mph no road rage on ghe canals 😂
Can’t wait to wake up at 1am to drive my truck for 15 hours.
