The tour goes to the village of Griethausen, where I cross the ‘Altrhein’, a dead branch of the Rhine. The rest of the ride goes through a Nature Reserve around the village of Schenkenschanz.
When the Rhine floods, Schenkenschanz becomes an island and the entire area up to the main dike is under water.
In winter, 100,000 Siberian wild geese use the Nature Reserve as their winter quarters.
