Alsop Station to Mapleton Lane 6 ½ miles each way

The LNWR Buxton to Ashbourne railway line opened in 1899.
It carried express trains from Manchester to London and a daily train delivered milk from Peak District farms direct to London until after the Second World War.

The line was part of Dr.Beeching’s famous railway reforms and closed in1967.
In 1971 the line was purchased by the Peak National Park & Derbyshire County Council, reopening soon after as the Tissington Trail.

The track bed, station buildings, platforms and other features were removed as they were thought to be eyesores at that time. This approach was thankfully rethought for later projects.
The first Tissington Trail warden, Peter Lawrence, used to patrol the trail on a horse called Muttly, during the 1970s. It continues as a multi-user trail to this day.
