Here’s our top 5…👇
1️⃣ Hardknott Pass
🔁 Loop: Eskdale to Wrynose Pass
🎢 One of the steepest roads in England (gradient hits 33%) and packed with sharp bends, sheep and stone walls… only for confident drivers, but the views are insane!
🧭 Best route: from Eskdale towards Duddon Valley
2️⃣ Wastwater Road
🌊 A dramatic drive alongside England’s deepest lake, framed by peaks like Great Gable and Scafell Pike.
🧭 Route: Santon Bridge to Wastwater via Nether Wasdale… ends at a viewpoint with a bench and stunning reflections
3️⃣ Honister Pass
🪨 Home to the Honister Slate Mine, this mountain pass winds between Buttermere and Borrowdale.
💨 Expect steep climbs and epic valley views… especially beautiful in low mist.
🧭 Route: Buttermere to Seatoller
4️⃣ Kirkstone Pass
🍻 Stop at the Kirkstone Pass Inn (the highest pub in the Lakes!) and enjoy the climb from Windermere or Ullswater.
🚗 A smoother pass but with amazing elevation and sweeping views
🧭 Route: Ambleside to Patterdale
5️⃣ Wrynose Pass
🌄 Connects to Hardknott Pass for a full mountain driving experience.
🎯 Amazing views of the fells, stone bridges, and usually way fewer cars!
🧭 Route: From Little Langdale towards Cockley Beck
