🚲 Cycling from San Lazzaro to Bologna City Center along Carlo Piazzi Bike Path
A quiet spring ride from the border of San Lazzaro di Savena into Bologna’s city center, filmed during a sunny morning. The full route covers about 6 km in 24 minutes, passing through a mix of residential areas and urban parks. Despite being a secondary connection, it’s faster or comparable to driving, which can take anywhere between 22 and 50 minutes during rush hour. Being a Limited Traffic Zone (LTZ), the city center is directly accessible by bike.
The ride is peaceful, but the infrastructure isn’t great. Most of the way is shared with pedestrians, and space is often tight or poorly defined. The only notable improvement in 2024 has been on Via Carlo Alberto Pizzardi (from 12:58), where they added new red asphalt and leveled the intersections — it used to be the worst part. Still, the route remains constrained, and nothing else is expected to change here anytime soon (like removing car parking – the horror).
According to Bologna’s Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP – BiciPlan), the official and more direct bike connection to San Lazzaro will eventually follow Via Emilia, with bike lanes and shared spaces — that route is not yet finished. So this one will likely stay as a local or recreational path, still very urban and full of mixed uses.

This is more of an alibi and much less a real bicycle infrastructure. If you're interested in that, come here to Berlin, where we have a lot of similar facilities left.
It's so annoying because Bologna has the geography and the culture to be the perfect bicycle city but the infrastructure is not there at all
