Otterton is a charming, picturesque village in East Devon, about 8 miles southeast of Exeter and just inland from the Jurassic Coast. It lies in the Otter Valley, close to the point where the River Otter flows into the sea at Budleigh Salterton.
Key features and character
• Classic Devon thatched cottages: Many of the houses are cob-and-thatch, giving the village a timeless, postcard-perfect appearance.
• Conservation Area status: Almost the entire village is protected, so it has changed very little in appearance over the last century.
• Population: Around 700–800 people.
• Location: Nestled between the East Devon AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) and the sea, with the South West Coast Path only about 1½ miles away at Ladram Bay.
Main sights and historic buildings
• St Michael’s Church: 12th-century origins with a Norman font, 15th-century wagon roof, and a very fine carved wooden screen.
• Otterton Mill: One of the oldest working watermills in Devon (mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086). Now a popular visitor attraction with a working mill, bakery, café/restaurant, craft shops, art gallery, and live music events.
• The Kings Arms: Traditional thatched pub in the centre of the village.
• Otterton Park: Former grounds of a large house that was demolished; now a caravan park, but the old walled garden and some estate buildings remain.
Things to do in and around Otterton
• Walk along the River Otter to Budleigh Salterton (about 2 miles) or upstream towards Ottery St Mary.
• Visit Otterton Mill for bread, cakes, lunches, and to see the mill in action.
• Easy access to the Jurassic Coast: Ladram Bay (dramatic red sandstone stacks and a pebble beach) is a short walk or drive away.
• The South West Coast Path runs along the cliffs above Ladram Bay and on to Sidmouth or Budleigh.
• Otter Estuary Nature Reserve at the river mouth (good for birdwatching (especially waders and wildfowl in winter).
A few quirky facts
• The village was once owned by the Duke family (of jeans fame) in the 19th century; they rebuilt many cottages in the picturesque style you see today.
• Otterton is on the East Devon Way long-distance footpath.
• It regularly wins “Best Kept Village” awards and is frequently used as a filming location.
In short, Otterton is one of those classic unspoilt Devon villages: quiet, beautiful, with a proper community feel, excellent food at the mill and pub, and perfect as a base for exploring the Jurassic Coast and the Otter Valley.
