I’m deciding between the MEC Lynx and the Specialized Rockhopper (base model). My budget doesn’t go beyond these two, so I’m not considering higher trims.
This will be my first mountain bike, mainly for beginner trail riding. Nothing aggressive, just learning the basics and riding local trails.
One thing that makes me slightly lean toward the Lynx is the 1x drivetrain. I’ve heard the single chainring setup improves chain stability and simplifies shifting, which sounds appealing as a beginner. The Rockhopper option in my range is 2x.
Aside from brand reputation, I’m trying to understand whether the Lynx is genuinely a reasonable beginner trail bike at this price point, or if the Rockhopper is clearly the better one long term.
