Hi guys, I am not new to riding bicycles, but I am new to riding bicycles properly and buying decent bicycles. I was told in another post that I should look for something hybrid style, and specifically told that the Trek Multitrack is a decent and cheap choice.
I am wondering if I should buy this one i found for $125, or if I should save my money and start off with something a little higher end?
My coworker who's more into the technical aspects of cycling (I just do it to commute/explore mostly) suggested that I save my money and start with a budget of $500 instead of $200. Are the used hybrid options in that price range noticeably better than something like a Trek Multitrack? Whatever I buy I will be riding daily almost year round, so I want it to be something nice. I had a lot of fun on my $100 1990s Huffy "Got Milk?" MTB, though, so I am wondering if price really matters? Definitely don't need MTB, though.
My commutes often involve transition from road/grass/gravel/dirt, and I need something that can take a beating. Idc what era it's from, i dont care about brand name either, I just want to find the best bicycle for my money. Thanks for reading, and thanks in advance for any advice.
Attached is one of the Trek Multitracks I was looking at, it screams "meh" to me on looks, but if it is fast and durable, I do not mind.

You can sometimes find some great bikes for this sort of money, but with the suspension forks on this it’s probably not a great fit for more casual/around town riding. They add a lot of weight, make the bike slower and it’s something else to go wrong compared to a rigid fork.
