Too harsh on the rime while mounting and dismounting a tire can do that. This can easily slash your tire and put an end on your ride. Might be worth considering sanding this part until its smooth.

  2. Not embarrassing at all!

Looks like the rim is scratched and it’s left a sharp burr that’s puncturing the tube? Same on the opposite side.

I’m wondering if you bumped a curb and it’s damaged the rim a bit, creating the burr.

Can you call a local bike shop and have them take a look at it?

  3. You can just sand this down it’ll be ok. Doesn’t seems like it’s that deep to be an issue, but sharp enough to pop a tube.

That’s the rim. Not the tape. The rim took a hard hit against a rock or curb or something like that. I would gently file down/off the sharp burr so it doesn’t poke at the tire when the tire compresses against something hard.

  5. “Instant flat” is often pinching the tube while installing, or something sharp is stuck in the tire. You can swipe a lump of cotton wool around the inside of the tire and see if it snags on something.

  6. Okay, a couple things here:

    1. That’s not the rip tape, that’s the rim itself. The rim tape is that soft, cloth-like material the covers the inner surface of the rim to prevent your tube from extruding through the spoke holes.

    2. No, that isn’t normal. Your rim is damaged.

    3. If it were just one spot, I’d assume it were from hitting a rock/curb/etc. but it looks like there’s extensive scratching and damage all over both sides of the rim. Unless this wheel has been ridden without a tire on it, you might want to ask your dad what he’s been using as a tire lever because a road bike rim should never sustain this level of damage through normal use/maintenance.
