this was one of the videos we found from Duthie mountain bike park in the Seattle area, I remember doing this and kinda wondering if it was something other people actually try to do or if manual to drop is just superior overall. I don’t think I’ve seen it very much and was wondering maybe cause it’s not as aesthetic or because it can be a little awkward trying to get your body position correct when actually cranking a sitting wheelie off a drop like this. It wasn’t hard, this was the first try but I definitely think if I practiced it more it could get cleaner because i definitely whacked my taint on the seat on landing. I wanted to do one off a bigger drop, there’s maybe a 7 foot high water container at a local trail with a landing I was thinking of but I am concerned about trying it if there could be a reason other mountain bikers don’t do it more often, is it because it’s dangerous or a bad idea or is it just because it looks stupid and I’m weird for wanting to try it?

Is there a reason people don’t do this?

  1. This is a good way to hit a drop slowly. Most of the time you want to go fast and pull the front of the bike up slightly so the rear tire hits the ground first.

  2. Not everyone can do a wheelie, but also, there are generally safer ways to do drops.

    Has steez factor though.

  3. Most people I know who are into MTB are not that good at wheelie.

I learnt to do wheelie like that when I was 30 YO. I started to train wheelie once in a while when I was like 10.

If at the beginning I’d knew that it would take 20 years, I’d choose other hobby.

  4. lol… why dont we do that simple thing that tons of us cant do to save our damn lives?  on a drop!!

  5. Wheelie dropping lips at slow speed was a thing back in the early days of free ride. Manual offs lip is super steezy , this looks awkward and your seat is high to accommodate holding the wheelie that long.

  6. Can’t speak for anyone else. However, I do this sometimes, but it’s generally just not that fun to take a feature that slow, and fun is the main reason I ride. Wheelies are cool during climbs, on skinnies, or just cruising down a sidewalk, but on the trail I am trying to hit light speed and don’t have time. Manual is much faster and easier at speed.

Bigger drops you’d land super back heavy and it would not be comfortable/might crash unless you’re doing it trials style and good enough to land in a manual (not a wheelie like what you’re showing). Plus, you’re gonna get violated by your seat if you keep the seat up like that.

You can manual up to the end of bigger drops for extra steaz but then you kind of want to get your weight back forward as you go over the edge to land more level.

  8. He’s trolling… most people can’t catwalk that distance but it’s a valid way to drop off most things at low speeds.

You can do it, but I opt for not risking a chain failure on most drops if I can avoid it.

  10. It’s a real highlight for me when I see it in an edit. But it is a high consequence move, one that’s really hard to get just right, and can go south really quickly.

  11. Watch some of the old north shore extreme videos.

Now try to manual the whole ramp, bunny hopping up it and doing a knolly off that.
