You can cycle from Shepherd’s Bush in west London to Barnes in south west London entirely on quiet streets and protected cycle lanes.
The route is 4.4km long (2.7 miles) and makes use of a new cycle crossing at Shepherd’s Bush Green as well as Cycleway 9 and Hammersmith Bridge.

Wow, this is the earliest I've been to one of your videos.
Recently started cycling after a long time, found your videos last month and find them very useful.
Watch out on king street particularly heading towards Hammersmith Broadway. I’ve seen it happen too often, impatient moped riders coming into the cycle lane to avoid jams. They join after the raised curb approximately where lyric square is. Sadly a cyclist lost their life here at the end of last year.
Great route, thanks!
Did you get something nice at Tesco?
Another great video. Looking at the data, air quality (NOX and PM10 particulates) has improved since the Hammersmith bridge was closed to motor traffic. Another reason why the local residents might want to keep it closed perhaps?
Ive noticed that Citymapper consistently gets the time it takes to cycle somewhere wrong. e.g it took 20 minutes for you at a reasonable pace but it says 43 minutes!
Probably deters people using the app from cycling as a alternative.
Have you considered adding a timer to your vidoes? Or just a time which appears at the end
Shepherd's Bush? Really? 😅
the amount of large SUVs in a dense area well covered by the tube is…strange
Adding contra-flow to a one way is a bit more involved than putting up a sign. As with any restriction to a peice of highway, it requires a Traffic Regulation Order. These can be quick to put in place if they don't get objections. If someone takes issue with it though it either has to be changed or go to the borough's cabinate to be pushed through if changing it would defeat the purpose of the proposal.
All in all, it can range from a £2500 process up to a £5000 process, depending on objections.
Hammersmith bridge is an interesting one. While its closure has certainly reduced traffic south of the river it has isolated Barnes quite a lot. Barnes does not have great transport links so if you have reduced mobility or the weather is crap cycling across the bridge is a bit of a pain. Luckily I live north of the river and there the effects of the closure have been much more positive, the traffic is reduced and it makes walking around furnival gardens and along the river much more pleasant, but then again Hammersmith is much better connected to the rest of London than Barnes is. I'm not sure what the best solution to Hammersmith bridge is. But if the long term plan is to keep it as a cycle route, there is a large roundabout north of the bridge that sees very little traffic as a result of the closure of the bridge. Perhaps some of this junction can be turned into a green space or something generally more useful. Also I think if the bridge is open to bicycles I think it should be open to mopeds as well, perhaps with a strict 20 mph speed limit. I feel that allowing the odd motorbike wouldn't impact traffic on either side of the river much but could unlock some longer commutes into london that are not feasible on bikes for the residents of Barnes. Great video!
Another great video in the sun. I would guess that Hammersmith Bridge will never be open to traffic again – estimates of cost just keep rising. Thanks for the video. geoff
@3:28 i would do this tiny bit of one way on the footpath!
whilst we wait for the new cycle lanes to be installed around Wood Lane and Shepherd's Bush (no sign yet of any work starting), it's weird that the council ripped out the protected cycle lane along the north side of Shep Bush … any idea what that's about?
One note: it's the A4 under the Hammersmith Flyover not the A40.
Another great video! Do you know if these routes appear on Google maps when searching using the by bike selection?
This reminds me of Broaadmead Road Bridge over the Central Line in Woodford. It's been open only to pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists since July 2023 due to structural defects. Redbridge Council is lobbying for the £80 million it would take to replace it, but I like it as it is.
So much of this could do with an upgrade especially shepherd's Bush to Olympia I have taken every single wrong turn it's possible to take. The left & right took me down behind some hotel, there are one way streets, it's just a warren. Even watching this I was turned around in 5 seconds no longer knowing what direction you were going 🤷♀️ given it's all flat I really wouldn't mind a couple of formulated blue lines thru it. I think there is a roundabout before the hotel that's always busy on the 1 way back to high street ken, once over that bit is also messy 😂oh lawd I've gone down the road by shepherd's Bush multiple times and there is no exit 🤦♀️ so if the road you entered is the only one it does make sense to have it a bit clearer X
Watching your videos makes me realize how different the 'cycling world' is in London compared to my POV rides in Saigon. 🌍 Your 4.4km route looks so peaceful and safe. I wish we had more protected lanes like these back home. Keep up the great work in showing us these beautiful routes! 🚴♂️🇻🇳
Another excellent video ! 👏👍
Keeping Hammersmith bridge closed to traffic is maybe good for Barnes (although the shops and businesses may disagree) Putney High Street/Putney Hill is suffering appalling traffic due to this route being closed.
Yay another West London route! It’s strange to see a section of my commute on here.
Another great video! 👏
Nice. Now all we need is for this endless rain to ease off.
