  1. I got 55s on my surly ogre, soon to be fixie/monstercross. Great for spinning, not mashing. Not great for leverage is what I’ve heard, but haven’t experienced that problem yet. Really ideal for quick start, spinning despite tech, and making pedal strikes into a fiction. You might really feel the pain on that 48t chainring tho. Don’t go brakeless on that unless you’re ready for it.

    I used it when I put 26″” wheels so I could fit larger tires in the frame and make it tracklocrossy. The idea with shorter cranks was to avoid pedal strike, since the frame would be closer to the ground when riding with smaller wheels. In the same way, shorter cranks can be useful in conversions of road to fixed gear, once the BB drop is longer in freewheel frames.

    Other than that, I find it too short for normal situations.. even the 165mm I use now I took long to get used to.
